In every one of us is the potential to know God. The problem is we as humans are very crude creatures. You have to only look at the events of today or a 100 or a 1000 years ago to see this. While it's true there are some inspirational and powerful examples of what people can do, on the whole those examples are but specs of dust in the atmosphere when compared to the evil, selfish, and hurtful things we people do to each other. The bottom line is that humans are very crude creatures. As such, trying to understand God's plan takes a combination of life experiences, willingness to learn, a willingness to humble oneself and a willingness to discover the truth.
